RMMS-Yuki-Kajiura-JaME-interview-2018-1

Yuki Kajiura: Japanese animation has a really wide reach, and is accepted throughout the world, which is something I can truly see occurring. It’s part of my job so it’s really interesting to see. Also, I’m really happy that our culture and music is enjoyed by people all over the world. It’s amazing that that feeling even extends to music. Even if it’s short, I would love to do a live show here in Los Angeles and would love to continue this journey. I’d be really happy if people could enjoy anime and music together.

Yuki Kajiura: The interesting thing is that, recently, anisong has developed commercial value, so it’s a different situation now. When it comes to the difference between anime music and modern, live-action film, sometimes anisong has a commercial value that live action scores don’t have. I think music and anime have the power to bring out emotions and feelings unconsciously when they’re presented together to the audience, so it’s important that I communicate with the director a lot beforehand. I read the script and make sure I understand the director’s intention — the elements he wants to put in and what kind of emotions or feelings will be created as a result. I really prefer to work with directors this way, and we’re able to create something powerful when we collaborate.

May’n charged onto the stage to open the concert and pump up the audience, backed by a full rock band and a squad of dancers. “Are you ready to make some noise? Come on, Los Angeles!” Beginning her set with her high-energy single “Chase the world”, followed by “One In A Billion -May’n Ver.-“, May’n shared her excitement, speaking in English to the thousands of fans in the Microsoft Theater. “Wow! So many, many people,” she said, smiling and waving to the fans in the high mezzanine, “I can see you!”

Yuki Kajiura: When I work with anime that has a “dark” atmosphere, I try not to let that dominate the entire flow, because the definition of “dark” depends on the scene, the depth and weight of the air, and how the “dark” elements are seen through different eyes. Therefore, I try to create something that fits the whole process rather than just serving a single scene.
