YOSHIKI SHAKES SUZUKA AT F1 FINALS: 130,000 WITNESS HISTORIC ANTHEM AHEAD OF WORLD TOUR

Japan’s Biggest Rock Star and Composer Performs Japan’s National Anthem “Kimigayo” at the F1 Japanese Grand Prix Final Pre-Race Ceremony

Historic Performance Featuring a Special Piano and Drum Arrangement Receives Worldwide Acclaim, Sparking Massive Reactions across Social Media

LOS ANGELES, CA – YOSHIKI–composer, classically trained pianist, and Japan’s biggest rock star–amazed global racing fans with his performance of “Kimigayo”, the Japanese national anthem, at the start of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Series Aramco Japanese Grand Prix Race at the Suzuka Circuit on Sunday, March 29.

Celebrated as “one of the most influential composers in Japanese history”, YOSHIKI created a unique fusion of his classical abilities and signature hard rock drumming style for an unforgettable live show in front of 130,000 spectators, the highest attendance since F1 resumed in 2009, which was broadcast to 180 countries.

The special arrangement of “Kimigayo,” performed with piano and drums, began with a serene classical piano melody, evoking quiet beauty. As the drums joined, it built into a powerful rock-infused crescendo, bringing intense tension and overwhelming impact to the moments just before the race started.

Following the performance, the crowd gave a thunderous ovation, and the official F1 broadcast commentators said, “Wow, I loved that! I felt that in my bones!”

On social media, reactions included comments such as “YOSHIKI PLAYING THE ANTHEM!!! GOATED OH MY GOD,” “YOSHIKI adding double bass and blastbeats to the Japanese anthem wasn’t on my bingo card, but it was cool,” and “It’s truly an incredible arrangement—it sounds amazing!!!!!” Alongside these, many praised it as “the coolest rock-style national anthem ever” and “absolutely incredible,” with admiration spreading worldwide.

Further reactions described it as “a truly historic performance,” “You won over the audience and set new standards!” “Now THIS is how a national anthem gets done,” and “That was one epic rock-themed national anthem!” Comments such as “YOSHIKI’s arrangement perfectly matched the F1 pre-start atmosphere” continued to flood in, generating widespread acclaim both in Japan and internationally.

After the performance, YOSHIKI immediately boarded a helicopter to return to Tokyo for final rehearsals before his sold-out three-day residency April 3-5 at Tokyo Garden Theater, which serves as the kickoff of his Yoshiki Classical 2026 World Tour.

Last week, The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall announced it will host YOSHIKI for two exclusive nights on July 16 and 17, 2026. Titled “Scarlet Night” and “Violet Night”, these performances mark YOSHIKI’s highly anticipated U.S. return following his third cervical spine surgery in late 2024. YOSHIKI will change the set list for each performance, making this an unforgettable experience for fans. The concert series represents a “rebirth” for the artist, blending his signature cinematic compositions with the unmatched acoustics of Los Angeles’ most iconic architectural landmark.

YOSHIKI MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST JAPANESE ARTIST TO PERFORM AT UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE HEGRA

Landmark Birthday Concert Celebrates 70th Anniversary of Japan-Saudi Arabia Diplomatic Relations

Legendary artist YOSHIKI headlined the “Hegra Candlelit Classics” concert on November 20 at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, marking both his first full performance since cervical spine surgery and a historic milestone as the first Japanese artist to perform among the ancient ruins.

The performance served as a powerful symbol of cultural exchange as Japan and Saudi Arabia commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations. Members of the Saudi royal family, the Japanese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, international dignitaries, and fans from around the world witnessed the momentous event, with many describing themselves as “overwhelmed” and “moved to tears”.

A Stage 2,000 Years in the Making

Hegra, an ancient necropolis built approximately 2,000 years ago and Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, has hosted only world-class artists, including Andrea Bocelli and Ludovico Einaudi. Under the glow of thousands of candles, YOSHIKI’s piano resonated through the historic silence, creating a magical atmosphere that captivated all in attendance.

During “Kurenai”, the ruins bathed in crimson light produced a breathtaking fusion of history and music. “This place gave me a strong inspiration,” YOSHIKI reflected, before debuting his new composition “Larmes” (French for “tears”). The 12-song set also featured “The Seine”, completed in August, alongside iconic works including “Endless Rain” and “Art of Life”.

Unprecedented Musical Dialogue

A highlight came when YOSHIKI performed with world-renowned trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, delivering a surprise rendition of their new song “AlUla,” arranged just hours before the show. The piano-trumpet dialogue against the backdrop of ancient ruins mesmerized the audience.

“I am truly honored to be here,” said YOSHIKI, noting that the performance fell on his birthday, a detail that added personal significance to the historic occasion.

Cultural Bridge Between Nations

The day before the concert, YOSHIKI participated in “Yoshiki at AlUla Music Hub”, a talk session officially recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the 70th anniversary commemoration. Discussions focused on strengthening ties between Japan and Saudi Arabia through music, art, and culture.

“I am here today because of everyone,” YOSHIKI expressed after the concert, reaffirming music’s power to transcend borders. The evening marked both a watershed moment and the beginning of a new chapter in YOSHIKI’s legacy as a bridge between cultures.

Message of Peace and Hope
At the August press conference in Tokyo announcing the performance, YOSHIKI reflected on the honor of being invited: “I am extremely honored and excited to perform at such a historic venue. I owe it all to my fans.”

He concluded the event by playing his beloved composition “ENDLESS RAIN” on piano, dedicating it to peace: “I wish it would rain peace all over the world. I hope to perform this in Saudi Arabia.”

His high-fashion label Maison Yoshiki Paris has gained global recognition, with its runway shows at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks surpassing 100 million views on YouTube. His wine brand Y by Yoshiki continues to thrive, most recently through a headline-making collaboration with world-renowned artist Yoshitomo Nara, also a 2025 TIME100 honoree.

Looking ahead, YOSHIKI will make history once again on November 20, 2025, when he becomes the first Japanese artist to perform a special concert at Hegra, the UNESCO World Heritage site in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, an extraordinary stage that has hosted some of the world’s greatest cultural figures.

J-POP POWERHOUSE 美麗 BI-RAY “BUTTERFLY (ACOUSTIC VERSION)” OUT TODAY
(LISTEN HERE)

ORIGINAL VERSION OF “BUTTERFLY”
HITS #1 ON YOUTUBE and iTUNES IN JAPAN

The new music video is directed by world-renowned composer, producer, and rock icon YOSHIKI (X Japan), who also makes an appearance. The cast includes Rebel Wilson, star of the film Bride Hard, along with Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect series), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress), JiJi Zumbado, Colleen Camp, and other leading Hollywood actresses.

Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, the four members of rising J-Pop sensation Bi-ray, the star-studded cast, and YOSHIKI intertwine. From the opening sequence to the scenes where Hollywood actresses, Bi-ray, and YOSHIKI intersect, everything is captured in a meticulously planned one-take shot. Every glance and step was carefully designed, and the challenge of filming it all in a single camera movement recalls the film Birdman. The unedited, continuous style creates both tension and immersion, pulling the audience into a vortex of music and storytelling, resulting in a cinematic visual experience that transcends the boundaries of a music video. YOSHIKI has also incorporated scenes from director Simon West’s film Bride Hard, creating a visual experience where the world of the movie and the music video blend seamlessly together.

The video features “Butterfly (Acoustic Version),” the latest single from rising J-Pop sensation Bi-ray, available to stream today. The original version of “Butterfly” soared to #1 on YouTube (9M+ views) and the iTunes Pop Chart in Japan and was also featured in the trailer for the summer action-comedy Bride Hard.

The song showcases Bi-ray’s stunning vocals and collective depth. The group made their U.S. debut earlier this year with a powerful performance of the national anthem at Dodger Stadium during Japanese Heritage Night. Bi-ray’s four members—Emi, Hinata, Cocomi, and Michelle—were personally handpicked by YOSHIKI.

YOSHIKI shares, “The moment I heard their voices, I knew they were something extraordinary. Each member has a unique sound and together they’re a force ready to change the future of J-Pop.

“Butterfly (Acoustic Version)” is a slow-burning, emotionally resonant ballad that begins with stripped-down instrumentation before building into a lush, cinematic arrangement. Released globally via Melodee with U.S. distribution by Virgin Music Group, the track highlights each member’s unique vocal identity. With origins in Japan, Canada, Russia, and the Philippines, Bi-ray embodies a new era of multicultural J-pop, delivering a unified and heartfelt performance.

The accompanying music video, directed by YOSHIKI, opens with the cast of Bride Hard prepping the group for stardom, leading into a stylish and energetic performance that blends Bi-ray’s bold fashion, colorful visuals, and Bi-ray’s undeniable talent.

Historic Global Collaboration: YOSHIKI × Yoshitomo Nara — Two TIME100 Honorees Unite

Icons of Music and Contemporary Art Launch Unprecedented Wine Project

At a packed press conference at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, legendary composer, rock star, and entrepreneur YOSHIKI and internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara—both named to TIME magazine’s 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World—unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration: “Y by YOSHIKI × Yoshitomo Nara Collaboration Wine.”

This historic partnership marks the first time that two Japanese artists named in the TIME100 list—Nara, one of the world’s most recognized contemporary artists, and YOSHIKI, the first Japanese musician ever selected—have joined forces on a global stage. Their union bridges the worlds of music, art, and wine, sparking international attention.

Based in Napa Valley, “Y by YOSHIKI” has consistently earned critical acclaim both in Japan and abroad. For this project, YOSHIKI has invited Nara—whose works are housed in world-renowned institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao—to design the label, making each bottle a true collector’s item that fuses wine and contemporary art.

The collaboration was born from a personal connection. A passionate fan of punk rock, Nara quickly bonded with YOSHIKI over shared artistic values and a mutual love of wine. This synergy led to the creation of a project that transcends borders, genres, and expectations.

This marks the first major collaboration for Y by YOSHIKI since its celebrated project with Stella McCartney, underscoring the rarity and cultural significance of this partnership. Together, YOSHIKI and Yoshitomo Nara are redefining the intersection of fine wine and high art.

Nara Yoshitomo on the Collaboration
“I’ve admired YOSHIKI’s extraordinary success in music for years, but what struck me most when we met was his honesty and authenticity. He’s someone I can truly trust. Above all, his wines are remarkable—absolutely delicious. The idea that my artwork would appear on his label made me incredibly excited, and ultimately led me to join this project. Even the bottle cap carries a small illustration, which is rare in the wine world. Of course, there was great pressure: how much artistic value could I bring to something that already had a perfected taste? After countless discussions, I’m proud that we are finally ready to share this with the world.”

YOSHIKI on Partnering with Nara
“When I first met Nara, I never dreamed we would collaborate on this scale. To create something together with an artist I deeply respect feels like a dream come true. I’m convinced this will become one of the most important projects of my career. Every wine in this collaboration represents the pinnacle of Y by YOSHIKI. I can’t wait for people around the world to experience them.”

Robert Mondavi Jr. Joins for Global Launch
Also taking the stage in Tokyo was YOSHIKI’s winemaking partner, Robert Mondavi Jr., whose family is synonymous with Napa Valley. Together they announced the release of three new vintages from the Y by YOSHIKI California series: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rosé. Mondavi highlighted the distinctive character of these new wines and reflected on his ongoing creative partnership with YOSHIKI. The new vintages will be released globally on Wednesday, September 24.

Y by YOSHIKI Members Club: A New Wine Subscription Service
In addition, YOSHIKI announced the launch of “Y by YOSHIKI Members Club,” a subscription service designed to meet surging demand and make his wines more accessible to fans and collectors. The program will offer two tiers:

• Smart Casual Club – Designed for everyday enjoyment, with access to newsletters, online content, and regular deliveries of Y by YOSHIKI wines.
• Masterpiece Club – An exclusive tier offering early access to limited releases and luxury wines, including rare California vintages, premium champagnes, and fast-selling collector’s items such as the just-announced “Yoshitomo Nara Collaboration Wine” and the “Domaine Takahiko Collaboration Wine” produced in Yoichi, Hokkaido.

The Members Club and its dedicated app will officially launch in Japan on Tuesday, September 30, with pre-registration beginning Thursday, August 28. The first shipments are scheduled for mid-November, with plans for global expansion to follow.

YOSHIKI TO BE THE FIRST JAPANESE ARTIST TO PERFORM AT HEGRA, A WORLD HERITAGE SITE IN ALULA, SAUDI ARABIA

FIRST INTERNATIONAL SHOW POST NECK SURGERY TO BE A SPECIAL CONCERT HELD AT A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

YOSHIKI announced at a press conference held at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, that he will be performing a special concert at Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, on November 20. This will be his first international show since undergoing his third neck surgery last October.

The performance, entitled “Hegra Candlelit Classics”, will take place on a stage lit by thousands of candles, with ancient tombs built approximately 2,000 years ago, as its backdrop. YOSHIKI, a leading Japanese composer, pianist, and drummer, has sold out some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London, and has received acclaim for his outstanding performances. This upcoming show will be unique and unlike any other in the world, where guests will experience YOSHIKI’s captivating performance and music that blends Rock and Classical Music, in a setting surrounded by historical ruins.

Also appearing on the first half of the show will be Grammy-nominated, world-renowned trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf, who has captivated audiences at festivals around the world. YOSHIKI will be closing out the show.

In April 2025, YOSHIKI was selected as one of TIME magazine’s “TIME 100 (the 100 most influential people in the world)” and in 2024, he became the first Japanese artist to have his handprints and footprints imprinted at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. He has consistently been active globally in a wide range of fields, including fashion, film, wine production, and charity work (through his 501(c)(3) Yoshiki Foundation America).

In the press conference, YOSHIKI said, “As many of you may know, I underwent neck surgery last October and am currently undergoing careful rehabilitation. I was still considering how to proceed with my concert activities, so honestly, I was hesitant when I received this offer. However, I decided to go ahead with the concert because I felt that this performance had great significance and could potentially lead to future exchanges between Japan and Saudi Arabia. I am extremely honored and excited to be able to perform at such a historic venue. I owe it all to my fans.” He spoke passionately, expressing his excitement for his concert, which began with a special offer from Saudi Arabia and was realized after over a year of negotiations.

The show will also be a special day for YOSHIKI, as he will be celebrating his birthday. The highly exclusive stage has been graced only by world-renowned artists such as Andrea Bocelli and Ludovico Einaudi, and YOSHIKI has been appointed to join the honorary list. The music, played in the ancient ruins lit by thousands of candles, will undoubtedly be etched deeply in people’s memories, transcending culture and time.

At the end of the press conference, YOSHIKI gave a special performance on the piano. “I wish it would rain peace all over the world. I’d like to play ‘Endless Rain’, which I also hope to perform in Saudi Arabia,” he said, and the melody he played deeply moved the large crowd of fans and press.

YOSHIKI to Perform the U.S. and Japanese National Anthems at the 2025 Major League Baseball Opening Day in Tokyo

The Global Icon’s Triumphant Return After Neck Surgery Marks a Historic MLB Season Kickoff

TOKYO, JAPAN (March 13, 2025) – Internationally renowned composer, rockstar, philanthropist, and fashion icon YOSHIKI has been selected by Major League Baseball (MLB) to perform the American and Japanese national anthems at the monumental 2025 MLB Opening Day in Tokyo. This historic event, taking place at Tokyo Dome on March 18, will see YOSHIKI take center stage before a global audience, setting the tone for one of the most anticipated games in MLB history – a high-stakes showdown between the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Chicago Cubs.

MLB’s 2024 World Series champions, The Los Angeles Dodgers, includes three Japanese players—Shohei Ohtani, Roki Sasaki, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto— who will return to their home country for this historic game. The Cubs will also showcase two Japanese stars, Seiya Suzuki and Shota Imanaga, making the event especially meaningful for fans worldwide.

YOSHIKI’s performance marks his first public performance since undergoing a third major neck surgery in October 2024, following decades of physically intense performances as a rock drummer and classical pianist. The performance is set to be a moment of triumph, resilience, and unity, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between the United States and Japan through the universal language of music and sport.

YOSHIKI is no stranger to monumental moments in history. He was chosen to compose and perform his song “Anniversary” for the 10th anniversary of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan’s accession to the throne, a performance that took place in front of the Tokyo Imperial Palace in 1999. His cultural impact transcends music, as evidenced by his groundbreaking achievement in 2023 – becoming the first Japanese artist to be immortalized in the 100-year history of Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre – placing his hand and footprints alongside the world’s most legendary stars.

YOSHIKI said:
“I feel honored to be part of this major event. I’ve performed the American anthem at Dodger Stadium and Carnegie Hall, but this will be my first time performing the Japanese national anthem in front of a live audience. This will also be my first performance since my neck surgery, but I will do my best to honor these beautiful songs and contribute to the special bond between the U.S., Japan, and the rest of the world.”

Strikes of black and gold paint on white fabric are inspired by German-Franco Lyrical Abstractionist, Hans Hartung, while a nod to American Pop-Art from the 60s is found in the final looks closing the show: a series of simple geometric shift dresses featuring a jacquard fabric with YOSHIKI’s “pop-art” portrait.

MAISON YOSHIKI PARIS fuses YOSHIKI’s visions of fashion, design, and lifestyle with glamorous and genderless designs. The Spring Summer 2025 show featured 33 looks.

The collection exclusively uses French luxury fabrics, from thick cotton twill, cotton/linen blend tweed with iridescent accents, double silk organza, poplin, and Ruschel knit lace with a rich textured hand. The shapes are modern and edgy, accentuated by strategically positioned stitching and black contrasting zippers. There are references to the world of traditional kimonos which YOSHIKI has been experimenting with through his fashion line Yoshikimono, launched in 2011, and that are now revisited through an even more contemporary and international lens.

The jewelry throughout the collection has been designed exclusively for MAISON YOSHIKI PARIS by Juana Martín and features whimsical oversized musical notes and letters charms made in 14K gold.

YOSHIKI’s edgy, androgynous style, which began with his band X JAPAN, revolutionized the entertainment landscape of Asia in regard to makeup and fashion, and is a trailblazer who has influenced decades of artists, including today’s top K-Pop stars. YOSHIKI debuted his MAISON YOSHIKI PARIS collection earlier this year at Milan Fashion Week F/W 24/25 at the invitation of Camera Nazionale della Moda. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Yoshiki will be presented with Variety‘s 2024 International Achievement in Music honor. The presentation will take place at the eighth annual Hitmakers celebration on Dec. 7 in Los Angeles, presented by AFEELA.

In the March 27, 2024 issue of Variety, Yoshiki was honored as Variety‘s 2024 International Achievement in Music honor, celebrating his prolific career as an artist, humanitarian, and philanthropist. Yoshiki is the first musical artist from Asia to receive this accolade, and joins the prestigious list of previous recipients including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé and Bad Bunny.

“Yoshiki’s decades of artistic excellence include genre-spanning music collaborations, documentary filmmaking and groundbreaking fashion endeavors. He has also consistently provided critical leadership in the cause of hugely impactful philanthropic efforts,” said Variety’s executive vice president of content Steven Gaydos. “We’re thrilled to present Yoshiki with the 2024 Variety International Achievement in Music award at our 8th Annual Hitmakers event.”

Since the start of his career as leader of rock group X Japan, Yoshiki has charted a path all his own, most recently exploring new creative endeavors in film with his directorial debut in “Yoshiki: Under the Sky” (distributed by Magnolia Pictures), as well as in fashion with the launch of his fashion line Maison Yoshiki Paris, which debuted on the runway during Milan Fashion Week and showed this fall at Paris Fashion Week.

Yoshiki was scheduled to be presented with the award at a Variety event earlier in the year but had to reschedule. Variety is pleased to make the presentation as a special addition to its Hitmakers event, which looks back on the year in music celebrating the writers, producers, publishers, managers and executives who helped make — and break — the 25 most-consumed songs of the year, as measured by Billboard and Luminate Charts. Hitmakers honorees include Hitmaker of the Year Charlie xcx, Changemaker of the Year Jelly Roll, Humanitarian of the Year Quavo, and Triple Threat RAYE.

This year’s event sponsors include Presenting Partner AFEELA, a mobility brand developed by Sony Honda Mobility Inc. They will showcase its prototype vehicle of their brand AFEELA and offer exclusive hands-on demos to attendees, providing a unique, up-close experience with the future of mobility. AFEELA will also present the Newcomers Award to Shaboozey and Benson Boone. Spotify will be an official partner of the event with a Spotify Correspondent on the red carpet.

YOSHIKI at Dreamforce 2024: Emphasizing the Importance of Preserving the Creative Ecosystem in the Age of AI

Internationally acclaimed musician, composer, and visionary YOSHIKI took the stage at Dreamforce 2024 to discuss the future of creativity and technology. In a thought-provoking conversation, YOSHIKI highlighted the increasing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the entertainment industry and the pressing need to protect the integrity of the creative ecosystem.

During the interview, YOSHIKI shared insights on his exploration of AI’s potential through his creation, “AI Yoshiki,” a humanoid version of himself that can interact with fans. Despite this innovation, YOSHIKI emphasized that AI should not replace the human essence of creativity, pointing out that the emotional journey artists experience during the creative process is fundamental to producing meaningful art.

YOSHIKI’S FULL VIDEO PRESENTATION is available now on the Dreamforce website:
https://www.salesforce.com/plus/experience/dreamforce_2024/series/the_future_of_ai_at_dreamforce_2024/episode/episode-s1e13

YOSHIKI said, “While AI can mimic certain artistic aspects, it lacks the emotional depth and human experience that defines true creativity. The process of creating art, with all its ups and downs, is itself an art form that AI cannot replicate — at least not yet.”

Watch: “AI YOSHIKI” Preview (Behind the Scenes)

YOSHIKI acknowledged the concerns within the entertainment industry about AI’s ability to copy unique artistic styles, but he believes the solution lies in proactive engagement.

“We can’t simply be afraid of AI,” YOSHIKI added. “It’s here, and we need to find ways to coexist. The key is preserving the creative ecosystem while leveraging AI’s potential in a responsible way.”

Throughout the discussion, YOSHIKI reiterated the importance of discussion between technology developers and the entertainment industry. He called for open dialogue to ensure that AI is used as a tool to augment human creativity, not replace it.

“The entertainment industry is part of a delicate ecosystem,” said YOSHIKI. “Artists create, engineers record, and fans respond. It’s an interconnected system that motivates us and enriches people’s lives. We must protect this balance and be careful not to disrupt it.”

As the world of AI continues to expand, YOSHIKI’s message at Dreamforce serves as a powerful reminder that technology and creativity must evolve together, but in ways that honor the human spirit at the core of artistic expression.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YOSHIKI to Undergo Critical Third Neck Surgery

Multiple doctors have determined that YOSHIKI of X JAPAN must undergo his third neck surgery immediately. However, due to his schedule commitments over the next two months, YOSHIKI will undertake cervical artificial disc replacement surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, California, on October 8.

Currently, YOSHIKI is suffering from chronic neck pain and a burning sensation in his left hand including his fingers, causing problems with not only performance but everyday activities. Physicians in the U.S. are hopeful that surgery on cervical discs C6-C7 can restore YOSHIKI’s health and have insisted that the musician adjust his demanding schedule for this important procedure.

YOSHIKI’s intense performance style as a rock drummer and classical pianist has had a severe impact on his physical health.

In 2009, he was diagnosed with cervical foraminal stenosis, leading to a cervical laminectomy and a cervical foraminotomy.

In 2017, YOSHIKI underwent a second surgery after suffering from a herniated disc and experiencing numbness and severe paralysis of the left hand and arm. The procedure resulted in the insertion of an artificial cervical disc in his neck.

YOSHIKI said, “This will be my third neck surgery. I started feeling this pain last year, then it increased severely during the past few months. Right now, I cannot feel my left hand and I’m having severe burning sensations in my left fingers. Fortunately, my motor neurons are still intact but the sensory nerves are damaged. Everything I touch feels like ice, including my piano keys. It’s unbearable. I know I should have this surgery immediately, but I need to honor the commitments I’ve already made to my fans and friends. Over the next two months, I have to cancel a significant amount of my schedule, but I will still make a few appearances. In terms of playing piano in my shows, I may have to use my right hand more than my left hand because of the pain. Then, in October, I have to cancel pretty much all my schedule. I know this will affect many people. I’m very sorry for this. After my surgery, I hope that I can get back to life, including being on stage, before the end of the year. Again, I apologize to everyone for the inconvenience, and I really appreciate all my fans’ support.”

Doctor Todd Lanman, M.D., the spinal neurosurgeon who will operate on YOSHIKI, said, “YOSHIKI has already had a cervical artificial disc replacement in C5-C6. After evaluating the MRI, CT scans, and X-rays, we see a spur in the right C5 affecting the nerve ridge and a protruding disc in C6-C7. More importantly, we also see that C5-C6 is fused and not moving, and that’s exerting exceptional pressure below at C6-C7 and generating a significant amount of pain.”

Doctor Lanman added, “During the procedure, a plastic surgeon will open the incision in the front of YOSHIKI’s neck, and once he gets through the skin, I’ll take over and operate on the spine. After the procedure, the plastic surgeon will close the area immediately to reduce visible scarring.”

Dr. Tommy Tomizawa, M.D., adds “I oversee YOSHIKI’s health in the U.S. Unfortunately, he will be going through severe pain for the next two months. In order to delay the operation, we will mitigate that pain as much as possible through medication and therapy. His commitment as a performer is second to none. Unfortunately, this dedication has caused a significant amount of damage to his body. It’s clear that YOSHIKI’s pain will only increase if we don’t intervene immediately.”

Doctors anticipate YOSHIKI will need several months to recover and gradually restart his physical activities, and he will remain under close medical supervision after the procedure. Following the operation, YOSHIKI will consult with doctors about resuming live performances.

In 2023 alone, YOSHIKI pushed himself to maintain a non-stop recording and event schedule, including producing the boy band XY, touring with his band THE LAST ROCKSTARS, ongoing philanthropic activities including donations for disaster relief in Japan, for mental health causes in the U.S. and humanitarian aid in Europe, while preparing multiple product releases including “Y by Yoshiki” wine, his new Rosé Champagne, and launching his high-fashion brand “Maison Yoshiki Paris” which debuted at Milan Fashion Week.

YOSHIKI also performed the Yoshiki Classical World Tour with headlining shows at Royal Albert Hall (London), Dolby Theater (L.A.), and Carnegie Hall (New York), and more last year.

At the same time, YOSHIKI also released his feature film directorial debut YOSHIKI: Under the Sky in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. He was also invited to perform the U.S. national anthem at Dodger Stadium in L.A. this spring.

As of now, Yoshiki is committed to doing 13 shows and multiple appearances around the world including Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the U.S. during the upcoming months of August and September.

In 2023, YOSHIKI was selected as the first Japanese artist to be honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood in nearly 100 years.

Following YOSHIKI’s operation, a discussion whether to cancel, postpone, or move forward as scheduled will be held amongst the agent, promoter, and management.

YOSHIKI is in close talks with his U.S. agency WME to schedule future tours accordingly.

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience this will cause to fans and everyone involved.
